Catch Up

As I type up this catch up post, I am guzzing hot nutty coffee and two of the best butter tarts in the world.

I live near a town called Grimsby. If you know Southern Ontario (in Canada!), the Grimz (as I refer to it) is located between Hamilton and St. Catharines. It's a super cute place, nestled into the Niagara Escarpment, with extremely shitty drivers.

Now, I had completely forgotten about the Butter Tart Lady. Today, Trev and I hit the roads looking for some parts he needed for the race car. One of our last stops was a store called TSC (Tractor Supply Company). As we approached TSC, there she was. Butter Tart Lady. Now, the BTL also sells peach pies, peaches and other fresh fruit. And it's all fresh from her place. She sets up a stand right beside TSC and sells her delicious wares. I think I nearly gave my husband a slight heart attack due to my squealing...I really dig the Butter Tart Lady. The two tarts you see below are numbers 3 and 4. I ate 1 & 2 promptly after purchase. 5 & 6 are being saved for breakfast. Here's hoping!

On our outing, we made a stop at Chapters. I think I just filled my reading quota for the rest of the summer. I did buy this book. I want to thank those of you who made comments on that post. I love to know what others are reading! Some are enticed by Joan Collins (I love a good ol' Harlequin once in a while!) and others loved Eat Pray Love. That's why I love blogging and hearing about what others opinions are. Whether we agree or not, there is no judgement...what a cool thing...

Anyhoo, The Perks of Being a Wallflower appears to be a good read: it's like a male version of Judy Blume coming-of-age book/ This novel was actually spotted in the teen section. I figured I had read the Twilight series, so one more teen book won't hurt. *wink, wink* Here is the publisher's description, for your interest:

Standing on the fringes of life offers a unique perspective. But there comes a time to see what it looks like from the dance floor. This haunting novel about the dilemma of passivity vs. passion marks the stunning debut of a provocative new voice in contemporary fiction: The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

This is the story of what it's like to grow up in high school. More intimate than a diary, Charlie's letters are singular and unique, hilarious and devastating. We may not know where he lives. We may not know to whom he is writing. All we know is the world he shares. Caught between trying to live his life and trying to run from it puts him on a strange course through uncharted territory. The world of first dates and mixed tapes, family dramas and new friends. The world of sex, drugs, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, when all one requires is that perfect song on that perfect drive to feel infinite.

Through Charlie, Stephen Chbosky has created a deeply affecting coming-of-age story, a powerful novel that will spirit you back to those wild and poignant roller coaster days known as growing up.

I also bought some classics...cannot beat 3 for $10 books: Persuasion, Emma and Wuthering Heights.

The yard was due for a clean-up and I tackled it this afternoon. I even accomplished more than anticipated:
  • whacked weeds
  • sprayed the driveway for weeds
  • pulled weeds out of all garden beds but the funky one in the back
  • trimmed ugly tiger lily bushes
  • watered all garden beds, hanging baskets, etc, etc.
  • found a dead rabbit
  • accidentally flung a toad...a big one...by its hind leg whilst pulling weeds from under hostas (toads and I are not getting along lately)
  • picked up dog poo and flung it in the field
  • sprayed off the front porch & the Adirondack chairs
  • washed my car & Armor-All-ed the tires
  • bathed the dog and pulled out enough fur to make a new dog (Cecilia is moulting!)
  • put together a wicked dinner of T-bone steak, BBQ baked beans & garlic potatoes
  • drank a Bud Lime....finally

And this was all after breakfast, grocery shopping, Chapters trip, a rendezvous with the Butter Tart Lady and stops at four auto part stores.

Sorry if you hate spiders...I know I do, but this guy was kinda cool...

I heart dragonflies. Like, love them so much that most items on our house have dragonflies on them. These two bad boys were clinging to the soffit along the front porch. They're huge...

Before I sign-off, a big thank-you to my Aunt Kerry. We had an outstanding day shopping in The States yesterday! Yay!
I hope you're all having a great Sunday night! Us crazy Canadians get one more day of relaxation (unless you're laid-off like me...everyday is Friday!), as it's our long weekend. Enjoy it!
Cheers!

"Perks" is awesome! I love reading 'Serious Literature,' but will always have time for YA - it's literatrue with a lot of empathy, heart, and honesty (which isn't to say that it's mushy, sentimental, or delivering a "message," thank goodness).

Ugh Amy, your home is sooo beautiful (I am jealous). That spider is hideous by the way. I love this post... so satisfying.
